Gachola
José Barroso
São Paulo, Brazil, 1934
Clown, actor, playwriter. His father was the projectionist Pedro Barroso. When Gachola was still attending elementary school he saw the clowns Tomé and Sinhô at Circo-Teatro Arethuza, in Graça Street, in the neighborhood Bom Retiro, São Paulo. He soon became fascinated with the circus universe and began sneaking into the show, underneath the tent, regularly. After a while, the tentmaster Carradini found out that he was getting in without paying and allowed him to sell candy in exchange for seeing the shows. Some years later, he made his debut at Circo Queirolo perfoming lasso and whips. In this circus he met Landão, the ventriloquist. Later in his life, Gachola owned the Circo Comanche.
