Albert Canales

Tunis, Tunisia, 1889- São Paulo, Brazil, 1965

Equestrian. Son of Luis Canales and of the Italian equestrienne Judith Pratti. Albert was part of the first generation of the Canales family. He, his mother and his sister Mercedes performed in Europe in the Los Canales trio. He came to Brazil and bought a tent from the clown, Chicharrão (José Carlos Queirolo), and named it Circo Oni. Later, the name was changed to Circo-Teatro Oni. There they presented circus acts, comedies and dramas, as well as duos and folk trios such as Serrinha, Caboclinho and Rielinho. The circus program also showed national and international adaptations of theater plays. “A canção de Bernardete” and “A Mestiça” were two of the most famous scripts. In 1914, Albert married Conchita Tereza de Canales in the town of Piracicaba, São Paulo. All their five children presented a dance act with bolleadoras - a tradicional Gaucho dance in Argentina and Southern Brazil: Henrique, Roberto, Walter, Gilberte and Oni Judith Canales. Oni Judith was later known as Cachita Stuart or Kathy Stuart on television.
