Zurka Sbano
José Antonio Sbano

Guaratinguetá, São Paulo, 1921-?

Actor, clown and horse trainer. He is the son of Eduardo Sbano and Antonia Pereira de Souza Sbano and belongs to the third generation of Calderash gypsies originated in Serbia and Italy specialized in molding copper pots. This practice began with his paternal grandfather, Giuseppe Zurka Sbanowich. The Sbano family immigrated to Brazil in the years 1895 and 1900. Here, they organized the Trupe Los Comanches and started performing lasso and whips. Zurka made his debut at age eight in rola bola, knife throwing and ladder acts. He worked for Circo Nova York and owned the Moderno Circo Antigo (Modern Ancient Circus) in São Paulo. Zurka married Ana Paula Reis and they had five children who all became professional artists: Norma, Marcelo, Silvia, Eduardo and Ricardo Sbano.
