In 1870, his family were touring with the circus in Porto Alegre, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. There, he married the Spanish artist Florípedes de Castro. He decided to become a circus artist in order to impress his father-in-law. The couple started the dynasty of the Portugal family, one of the most traditional in Brazil. Their descendents are in the seventh generation. Circo Portugal played a role in the history of Brasília. The city was specially constructed to be the capital of Brazil in 1960. Circo Portugal performed throughout the five year construction process presenting shows for the workers and politicians.
