Antolin Garcia

São Paulo, Brazil, 1904 - Piauí, Brazil, 1987

Actor and owner of Circo Garcia, he is the only son born in Brazil of João Garcia and Ana Magaz Lozano Garcia, both from Almendralejo, in Spain. Antolin started to work as a tailor however he has always been in love with theater. He was discovered by the actor Benjamim de Oliveira in 1923, whose circus was set up at Praça da Bandeira (Bandeira Square) in Rio de Janeiro. There he was the first actor of the company for seven years. Antolin later performed at the circuses França, Guarani, Serrano and Circo Zoológico (owned by Juvenal Pimenta). In 1937 he bought a big top from the tamer and equilibrist Joaquim Araújo and sewed all of the casts' costumes. From that time on, he became a very successful circus manager, travelling Brazil as well as Africa, Asia and South Americas for eleven years. At that time, Circo Garcia was remaned to Circo Brazil. The circus closed in 2002 after 74 years of activities. Antolin Garcia is the author of the book, O Circo (The Circus) in which he tells his fascinating experience in the circus.
