Raquel Rache de Andrade

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1963

Acrobat, aerial artist. Her father is an engineer and her mother a psychoanalyst. From age seven to twelve, while she was studying theater in junior high school she took ballet with Slava Goulenko and mimic with Lina do Carmo. A few years later, she joined the group Asdrúbal and stayed with them until she was nineteen. She was already a professional actress when she enrolled the National Circus School in Rio de Janeiro from 1982 to 1986. There she specialized in icarian acts with Augustinho Bastos, acrobatics with Edvar Ozon, adagio and teeterboard with Roby Rethy.  Upon graduating, she performed as a trapezist at Concha Verde and Circo Voador with the group Intrépida Trupe, with whom she travelled to Mexico. Following this event she formed the group "Banduendes por acaso estrelados". In 1986, she moved to France to study at Annie Fratellini  circus school. There she acted as a flyer in bambu acts with her sister, Ana Rache, who was also a circus student in Rio. In 1987, she was invited by the French group Archaos to perform icarian acts in a circus tent. The shows ended in 1989. Durng these two years, she lived the typical circus lifestyle, in tents and trailers. Then, she came to Brazil to practice aerial acts with her instructor, George Laysson. Returning to France, she rejoined Archaos in 1993 until 1999. Soon after, she starred in the play "In Vitro", by Guy Carrara, one of the Archaos founders, with whom she married. In 2006, Raquel retired from the circusring and organized the Biennale Internationale des Arts du Cirque in Marseille with Guy. In 2013, the Biennale became a public event and had its first event in 2015, to make people aware of the importance of the act of creativity within circuses. Nowadays, Raquel is one of the directors of Archaos, a group that also organizes exchange programs and workshops for  writing circus scripts.
