Clown. He set out to became an ordained priest, but changed his mind along the way and instead started working as a scenographer and poster painter. As a black man, he used to paint his face white during performances. This was a very common practice in the 1910s and 1920s for other black artists, such as Benjamim de Oliveira and Dudu das Neves.
