Joelma Costa

Bataguassu, Mato Grosso do Sul, 1969

Actress, acrobat, equilibrist, clown. She studied Social Siences at Unesp in Araraquara, São Paulo. She is the daughter of Joaquim Daniel da Costa and Sonia Gray, and belongs to the third generation of artists in her family. The rural music duo, Cascatinha and Inhana are her godparents. In her childhood she worked for Circo do Balalau selling candy and helped with the ticket admission. When she was a teenager, she took part in the program "A Hora do Rádio" as a dancer. Joelma is the founder of ASFACI- Associação de Famílias e Artistas Circenses (Artists and Circus Families Association)- that promotes meetings for the research and history of the circus. In December 2003 she organized the I Encontro de Famílias Circenses in Araraquara, São Paulo and in December 2004, the virtual forum Circomunicando which as Asfaci as one of the administrators. In 2005, she was elected as the representative for circus artists in the Câmara Setorial de Circo da Funarte/Ministério da Cultura. She now directs and produces circus shows.
