Silki
Adelino João da Silva

Taquara, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, 1919 - Poá, São Paulo, 1998

Fakir. Due to his capacity to go on without eating anything for long periods, he was always on evidence in Brazil and abroad, from the late 1940s until the 1980s. Silki performed in circuses, theaters and on the streets as a fakir, and ilusionist, always injuring his body with nails and sharp objects and showing an immense capacity of physical resistence. He used to pierce his body with swords, knifes, nails and remain buried for a couple of days. When he was eleven he left home and joined a circus. Two years later he started touring with Circo Hormen in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. It was in this circus that he met a fakir named Silki who taught him all about ilusionism. When this man died, in 1932, he adopted his artistic name Silki. He performed in various circuses, such as Stankowich, Norte-Americano and Olímpico. In 1947, he started a long period without eating in the city of Curitiba and went on getting better in his  fastings and performing lying in a bed of nails and also surrounded by snakes in a small glass box. In 1955, he beat the world record of fasting by staying hundred days in a cinema, in Rio de Janeiro, without being feed. In 1957, he stood hundred and seven days fasting inside a shack.
